Fort to Port About Halfway Complete
With 23 more miles of new US 24 opened in October, the project to widen the highway from Fort Wayne, Indiana to near the Port of Toledo is just about halfway complete. Construction from Napoleon to Maumee is underway and is expected to be complete in 2012. Once expanded to four lanes, the new expressway will allow for much safer travel for the mixture of truck and residential traffic along the former two-lane, rural highway. In northwest Ohio, trucks make up about a third of the overall traffic on US 24.
The completed new US 24 will bypass the Village of Waterville. The old US 24 will then be modified in the village area to become a local road. The project will include bike facilities and is scheduled to be completed in 2012-2013.
