Regional Transportation Summit: April 8

The 2011 Transportation Summit will re-introduce the ODOT Deputy Director for our region, and will feature workshops on complete streets and road repair on a budget. Transportation planners and engineers*, community leaders, economic development professionals, contractors, and others interested in regional transportation are invited to attend the 2011 Transportation Summit, Friday, April 8, 8 a.m-2 p.m. at the Grand Lobby of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza. The two workshops are in the morning session. The first is Stretching Dollars with Alternative Approaches to Road Reconstruction. This will be a panel discussion moderated by Robin Whitney, P.E., Commissioner, City of Toledo Division of Engineering Services. Panelists include Anthony Jarem, P.E., Vice President EDP Geosciences; Don O’Connor, P.E., City of Toledo Division of Engineering Services; and Jeff Lohse, P.E., Chief Deputy Engineer, Lucas County Engineer’s Office.

The speaker for Retrofitting for Complete Streets: Accommodating Bicycles and More is John LaPlante, P.E., P.T.O.E., Director of Traffic Engineering for T.Y. Lin International. Prior to joining T.Y. Lin 1992, Mr. LaPlante had been with the City of Chicago for 30 years in various transportation engineering positions. He has been involved in several national committees related to bicycle policy and was principal author of the 1999 AASHTO Bike Guide. He has prepared bicycle plans for a number of Midwest cities and has taught many courses in bicycle facility design for state DOTs, universities, and as part of a Federal Highway Administration teaching team.

Following lunch and the TIP Committee election, attendees will hear from Todd Audet, P.E., Deputy Director, ODOT District 2. Mr. Audet is returning to the deputy director position he held from 2003 through 2007. He began his ODOT career as an Engineer in Training in 1990 and rose to Acting Construction Engineer during the construction of the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway. Working in the private sector from 2007 through 2010, he increased his knowledge of intermodal transportation as the Vice President of Operations at Midwest Terminals of Toledo International. Mr. Audet holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Air National Guard with more than 20 years of military training. He is a member of the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, the Toledo Maritime Security Committee, and the Toledo Harbor Safety Committee. He also serves on the board of the University of Toledo Intermodal Institute.
