Leasing the Ohio Turnpike?
Transportation stakeholders in northern Ohio are concerned with an ongoing discussion about possibly leasing the Ohio Turnpike. The turnpike is a key transportation asset in the state and changes in its operations directly impact the transportation system and economic competitiveness in the region. State officials have announced that they are considering a variety of options for leasing the turnpike, or possibly shifting management of it to ODOT. Because the options are so broad and because no specific proposals are under discussion, TMACOG members have not taken a position on the topic of leasing. But since members and partners will be affected by any changes in operation, TMACOG offers the following recommendations as the discussions continue...more

Free Replacements for Leaky Gas Caps
TMACOG and the City of Toledo Division of Environmental Services invite drivers in Lucas and Wood counties to stop by one of the gas cap testing locations this summer to see if the gas cap on their car is secure. A leaking or missing gas cap adds to air pollution, and is expensive. To test your gas cap, drive in to one of the 2011 testing sites at a Kroger store or Shell station. The compression test only takes a few seconds. Most leaky or missing caps can be replaced for free on the spot. Last summer, teams found that more than 11 percent of cars and trucks driving around in northwest Ohio were leaking gas into the atmosphere through leaky or missing gas caps...more

River Restoration at University of Toledo
TMACOG Maumee River Coordinator Matt Horvat is working with the partners at the University of Toledo to restore more natural features to the Ottawa River where it runs through the campus.
“Most of the river in that section was re-routed and channelized a long time ago,” said Horvat. The area in question is about .7-mile long. Horvat notes that there is almost no plant life in the area. “Almost nothing is growing in the streambed or on the banks, none of the grasses and plants that we normally have in area creeks.”...more

Ozone Action Season Reminder
During the warmer months, everyone can take steps to reduce the amount of ozone in the lower atmosphere: limit gasoline emissions by reducing the amount of driving you do and reduce use of gas-powered lawn equipment. You can also lower household energy demand with simple steps including line drying laundry, unplugging appliances that use energy even at rest, and keeping air conditioners in good repair. Monitor local air quality here. When conditions say that precautions should be taken by sensitive groups or advise caution, children and people with lung problems should avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
