Bike Week 2011

As the local sponsor of Bike Week in northwest Ohio, this year TMACOG partnered with TARTA, the Safe Kids Coalition, the Metroparks of the Toledo Area, Toledo Area Bicyclists, Hostelling International, and other groups to promote a wide range of bicycle-related activities for the annual May celebration of bicycling.

Bike to School Day is organized by school districts to promote healthy activities for students using safe routes to school. More children riding bikes means fewer cars carrying them and more exercise as part of the school day. The Ride of Silence is an annual event held on busy city streets in memory of people hurt or killed while riding bicycles, and to remind drivers to safely share the road. Police crews of the City of Toledo, the University of Toledo, and Ottawa Hills, and emergency responders from Toledo Fire and Rescue escorted the large group of riders. Other activities included Bike to Work Day, Safe Kids bike rodeos at the Metroparks and area festivals, and family fun rides on the bike paths at the Metroparks.

ProMedica is a corporate sponsor of Bike Week. Their support enabled TMACOG to create t-shirts, post billboards, and buy advertising to promote the week’s activities. WTVG-13abc was the media sponsor, providing public service announcements and covering events.

The Pedestrian & Bikeways Committee is part of the Transportation Department at TMACOG. Its mission is to integrate walking and bicycle facilities with the entire transportation system, to increase options for cyclists, and improve safety for walkers and riders. During Bike Week, TMACOG invites the public to explore options for both recreation and transportation on two wheels. The bike and ped pages on the TMACOG website contains maps of regional bike facilities as well as links to state agencies, bike laws, and bike groups. All publications can be downloaded and printed. For more information about the Pedestrian & Bikeways Committee, contact Kent Gardam at 419.241.9155 ext. 116.
