Options for SR 18 Near North Baltimore
ODOT has been researching options for relocating State Route 18 near North Baltimore. The area is of concern because of truck traffic that is expected to increase near the new CSX Northwest Ohio Trans-shipment Terminal there. ODOT is looking for strategies to improve safety and improve connections between the terminal and highway access.
From an initial list of four options, two best alternatives are being proposed that have been shared with Wood County residents. The first option proposes relocation of SR 18 starting at Liberty Hi Road and following a curve between SR 18 and Belmore Road, then reconnecting at SR 18 and Main Street with a single roundabout. The second option would re-route SR 18 from Liberty Hi Road to Belmore Road then rejoin at SR 18 on Main Street. This alternative would contain three roundabouts.
Both options address the current problem where SR 18 passes through the center of North Baltimore and takes a sharp L-shaped turn at a speed limit of 35 mph.
“We recognize that North Baltimore has huge logistics potential,” ODOT Director Jerry Wray said in a statement. “Being able to develop this route into a safe, efficient roadway as quickly as possible is vital to the region’s economic growth.”
