TMACOG Bike Week 2011

Bike Week is May 12 – 22
Wipe off the cobwebs, oil the bike chain, find your helmet and join in TMACOG Bike Week activities. All activities are free and no registration is required. Helmets are required.

During the annual TMACOG Bike Week, TMACOG reminds drivers to look out for cyclists and always share the road; give bikes a three-foot clearance when passing. We also highlight some of our area’s bike riding facilities (large PDF), distribute maps and guides, and encourage people to use bicycles to commute to work or school.

208 Plan – Example of Local Cooperation and Control

TMACOG manages the Areawide Water Quality Management Plan (the 208 Plan) in cooperation with all the jurisdictions and agencies in the area that manage water treatment facilities. The commitment and hard work of the partners ensures that we are all fixing problems cooperatively and efficiently while planning ahead for maintenance and development. Scrap Yard Plan Begins in May
TMACOG’s Maumee River Coordinator is working with the City of Toledo on a two-year project to reduce pollution from area salvage sites and junk yards. The project begins activity this month. Owners and managers of the yards will receive a letter of information and site visits will follow. The Ottawa River Scrap Yard Pollution Prevention Program is one that yard operators have asked for. They want advice and help to control hazardous runoff from their properties...more

“No Contact” Advisory Lifted on Ottawa River
The “no contact” advisory for the Ottawa River above river mile 8.6 in Toledo has been removed by order of Ohio Department of Health Director Ted Wymyslo, M.D. The advisory had been in place since April 1991, after sampling conducted in 1986 and 1990 by the Ohio EPA found high levels of PCBs in fish and sediment in the lower eight miles of the river, especially in the area near the Dura Avenue and Stickney Road landfills...more

Ohio Conference on Freight is on Track


Planning is well advanced for the 2011 Ohio Conference on Freight scheduled for September 20-21. TMACOG planners and consultants are booking speakers and organizing workshops to address how the freight industry impacts the economy in Ohio and the Great Lakes region. The conference will focus on the value-added role of the warehousing and logistics cluster of industries. Follow conference developments here.




2035 Plan – Update 2011
The official review and update of TMACOG’s long range transportation plan is moving ahead. In March, the Transportation Council approved a list of Committed and Priority projects for which financing is expected. In April, a list of 12 Plan Initiatives, and 41 Plan Policies were approved by the council...more

Member Highlight:
Hostelling International-Toledo Chapter


“Hostelling is about travel with a purpose – to get to know people of different cultures,” says Scott Carpenter, PR Chair of the local Hostelling International Council. There are 31 councils of Hostelling International in the U.S. and each is self-governed and provides activities for their communities. There are safe, affordable hostels worldwide, 72 of them in the  United States, including Malabar Farm here in Ohio....more


New Directory Available
The completely updated version of the 15-county Directoryof Public Officials is now available. TMACOG members have received copies of the directory as part of their benefits of membership. Additional copies may be purchased by members ($50) and non-members ($150).

The directory is a comprehensive guide to elected officials in 12 counties in northwest Ohio and Monroe, Lenawee, and Hillsdale counties in Michigan. It includes meeting times, phone numbers including many home phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. Many social service agencies and special districts are also included in the directory as are state and federal elected representatives. The directory is updated every year following elections. State-wide Website Serves Members



TMACOG and 22 other agencies are members of the Ohio Association of Regional Councils (OARC). OARC represents the interests of 1,525 cities, counties, villages, and townships around the state. A new OARC website has been created as a tool for communication between agencies, and as a resource for members who are looking for a statewide perspective. The website shows what these agencies are doing, separately and together, to promote regional cooperation and share opportunities. TMACOG members and others are invited to visit regularly to stay in touch with events throughout the state.
