Apply for Clean Ohio Funds by November
Communities in Lucas County are invited to apply for grants to preserve open space. The Clean Ohio Fund has allocated $1,267,184 for nonprofit organizations to preserve wetlands, parkland, or other open spaces. Applicants must provide a minimum 25 percent in local matching funds. Applications must be submitted to TMACOG by 5 p.m. November 13, 2012.
Dams Breached at Toledo Botanical Garden
As part of a plan to restore natural water flow through the Toledo Botanical Garden, holes were created in two dams in the park and water was allowed to flow out.
The dams were constructed about 30 years ago as part of a design to create lakes at the site. When built, the lakes were 10 to 14 feet deep. Because of sediment being deposited behind the dams, the ponds are now much shallower, in some places only inches deep...more

Northwest Ohio will be the site of some field trips that are part of EcoSummit 2012, September 30 through October 5 in Columbus. The summit is organized by Ohio State University, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, Ecological Society of America, INTECOL, and the Society for Ecological Restoration. Local field trips include a visit to the Stone Lab in Lake Erie, Oak Openings, and a coastal tour of Magee Marsh and the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.
Some of the world's most respected minds in ecological science will speak about restoring the planet’s ecosystems at the summit. Scheduled to present are Nobel Prize laureate Elinor Ostrom, Pulitzer Prize winners E.O. Wilson and Jared Diamond, Kyoto Prize winner Simon Levin, and Stockholm Water Prize laureates Sven Jørgensen and William Mitsch.

The little village that was started by one man in 1831 is all grown up. Waterville was officially re-designated as a city in 2011 when the Census showed that its population exceeds 5,000. Waterville now meets with the City Caucus at TMACOG meetings. ...more
