Swan Creek Vernal Pool Restoration

A region identified as a priority in the Swan Creek Balanced Growth Plan will get attention and help with restoration in a new project. The site is on property adjacent to Swan Creek near the Butterfly House in Whitehouse. The project will include restoration of a seasonal vernal pool and floodplain, improvement to in-stream habitat, and riparian enhancement. The owner of the property, Duke Wheeler, is helping with the work and has even donated some large trees to the restoration of the Ottawa River at the campus of the University of Toledo. (See “Ottawa River Restoration Expanded.”)

TMACOG has formed a project management team to advise and supervise the Swan Creek Vernal Pool project. The team includes Cheryl Rice from the Natural Resources Conservation Service; Mike Melnyk from Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District; Kyle Spicer from Partners for Clean Streams; and Tim Schetter from the Metroparks of the Toledo Area. Work will begin in the fall of 2013.

Three-Day River Restoration Workshop

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will present a free workshop and series of site visits on the Ottawa River August 6 through 9. Partners for Clean Streams is the local partner for the workshop. The program will feature local river bank and in-stream habitat restoration strategies. Organizers say that attendees will walk from a classroom at the University of Toledo to a stream restoration site while it is being constructed under the leadership of Dave Derrick, research hydraulic engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers. TMACOG Maumee River Coordinator Matt Horvat will be discussing work he has done on the Ottawa Hills dam remediation project and on the UT campus.
