TMACOG Recognized for Excellence

The Eastern Maumee Bay Chamber of Commerce recognized TMACOG with their Prism Award for General Excellence at the annual banquet and awards ceremony held March 27. The chamber represents governments and businesses east of the Maumee River in an area including East Toledo, the cities of Oregon and Northwood, the village of Genoa, and Lake Township. The General Excellence Award is granted to a business or organization of any size based on excellent performance. Criteria for the award include service to the businesses and communities of the Eastern Maumee Bay region, civic and community involvement, and creating business opportunities.

TMACOG President Tony Reams and Director of Communications Peggy Ricard represented TMACOG at the event and were pleased and surprised when the award was announced. Tony Reams said, “I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the officers, staff, and members of TMACOG. It’s a tribute to our members’ commitment to regional cooperation and collaboration.”

The Prism award is a glass sculpture by Shawn Messenger, a highly honored local artist whose work is in private collections around the world.

Peggy Ricard, TMACOG director of communications, holds the Prism Award. With TMACOG President Tony Reams and Chrys Peterson, the evening’s emcee.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

When the U.S. Congress finalized fiscal year 2014 appropriations, they included full funding of $300 million for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. This reflects President Obama’s request and is an increase of $15 million from FY 2013. Congress also provided $1.45 billion for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, and $906 million for the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund.

The local effect of the funding is that programs where TMACOG and its partners have had successful grant applications in the past are likely to continue to have funding that we could apply for. TMACOG planners noted that grant applications are sought to address specific concerns that have measurable outcomes. Successful applications have goals that are identified as regional priorities. In the TMACOG region, the Portage Watershed Plan, the Swan Creek Balanced Growth Plan, and Maumee River Watershed Action Plan are all plans identifying priorities and all have been endorsed by state agencies. Applications that address issues in the plans are stronger contenders.

Bike Month

Tune up your bike at area bike shops (see the list of shops offering ABC Quick Checks,) stop by Toledo Bikes to learn how to do your own repairs, check out trail and road maps with bike access, and get ready to participate in the many activities of bike month in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

“With increased interest in healthy, sustainable, and economic transportation options, it’s not surprising that, from 2000 to 2011, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 47 percent.”
- League of American Bicyclists

This year, TMACOG is making a special outreach to schools, inviting them to participate in Bike to School Day on May 14. While half of children usually walked or rode a bike to school in 1969, as of 2009 only 13 percent did. See a list of events after the jump and check back to the Bike Month webpage for a complete calendar of activities including bike club rides and additional Metroparks more
