Free Stormwater Webcasts Offered in 2014

TMACOG’s Stormwater Coalition will host a series of webcasts in 2014 provided by the Center for Watershed Protection. The sessions address best management practices and green infrastructure. Stormwater Coalition members and interested people will be invited to view the webcasts at the TMACOG office and discuss the regional implications afterwards. The two-hour webcasts will be of interest to operators of stormwater green infrastructure, watershed coordinators, builders, city planners, or anyone interested in management of stormwater.

There will be no cost to attend. A certificate for professional credit will be provided: 2PDH (equivalent to 0.2 CEU). Some of the topics provided by the Center for Watershed Protection include maintenance of green infrastructure, local codes in stormwater management, and tying stormwater programs to water quality requirements. The webcasts presented will be based on the interest of Stormwater Coalition members. A minimum number of registrants may be required. For a full list of webcasts, see the webpage here.

Dates and topics of the webcasts will be posted on the stormwater webpage and announced by e-mail. To be added to the e-mail list or for more information on the series, contact TMACOG Stormwater Planner Kari Gerwin at 419.241.9155 ext. 103.

GIS and Health Department Planning

TMACOG Environmental Planner Matt Horvat is working on a contract through the Ohio EPA to improve analysis functions in the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department. The health department is converting their paper files to digital data and incorporating that data in a Geographical Information System (GIS). The goal of the program is to develop new ways to improve public health through visual analysis of already available data and to train health department staff on the use of GIS. Mastering GIS will allow staff to make better connections between data and public health issues, making staff efforts more productive.

Horvat explains, “When information is stored away in file cabinets, you can’t get a big picture the way that you can by looking at a map where all the information is consolidated and visual.” He cited an example of how a GIS changes data presentation. When septic system inspection reports are on a single piece of paper in a file cabinet in one of three rooms full of file cabinets, analysts can’t easily see which piece of property might have a septic system that has never been inspected. But when the information is tagged to a map, and all the parcels that have approved septic systems are highlighted, you can see one that has not been inspected.
