May is Bike Month

Get your bike out and get ready to explore northwest Ohio on two wheels. During Bike Month, TMACOG works with partners to sponsor bike rides, provide safety training, and educate cyclists and drivers about laws regarding cycling. TMACOG’s goal is to establish bicycling as a practical commuting option and to incorporate bicycles into street transportation safely and efficiently. To help encourage bike commuting, TARTA offers a reduced 25 cent bus fare for anyone using the bike rack Monday, May 15 through Sunday, May 21.

New in 2017 is the 3 Feet Passing Distance Rule. Motorists are now required to leave a 3-foot margin when passing a bicyclist. Bicyclists are permitted to use an entire lane, just as motorcyclists do. A reminder for motorists; except in zones marked as hazardous, it is permissible to cross the solid yellow line to pass slow moving vehicles in Ohio if the slower vehicle is going less than half the posted speed, the overtaking vehicle does not exceed the speed limit, and there is sufficient clear sight distance to pass safely (ORC 4511.31).

See TMACOG.org/bikemonth for all the activities, maps, links to bike clubs and parks. On that page find contact information for the many local bike shops that are offering free ABC Quick checks in May. This service is a basic review of air, brakes, cables and chains, and quick release parts.
