May is Bike Month! Ride Safely
During Bike Month, TMACOG works with partners to sponsor bike rides, provide safety training, and educate cyclists and drivers about laws regarding cycling. TMACOG’s goal is to establish bicycling as a practical commuting option and to incorporate bicycles into street transportation safely and efficiently.
• Cycling just got safer with the new 3-foot rule. Motorists are required to leave a 3-foot margin when passing cyclists.
• To help encourage bike commuting, TARTA offers a reduced 25 cent bus fare for anyone using the bike rack the bus Monday, May 15 through Sunday, May 21.
Read on to learn about Bike Month Events and to schedule an ABC Quick Check.
Getting ready to take that first bike ride of the season? Do the ABC Quick check. It’s a simple way to remember how to inspect your bike before you head out for the first ride of the spring.
A – Air. Check the condition of your tires. Check your pump.
B – Brakes. Make sure that brakes grip evenly and tightly.
C – Cranks & Chain. Roll the pedals around, make sure the chain is oiled, see that the gears shift easily.
QUICK – Quick Release. Look at the quick release connections on the front wheel and any other locations. Make sure they are solidly connected.
CHECK – Take a test drive and run through the gears, try the brakes, and adjust your mirrors.
