Transportation for Elderly and Disabled
At their December meetings, the TMACOG Transportation Council and the TMACOG Board of Trustees made recommendations to help fund the purchase of specially equipped vehicles that will be used by the region’s elderly and disabled populations. The funds are part of a federal program called Specialized Transportation. TMACOG’s recommendation will next go to TARTA which is the controlling agency for the program. The TARTA Board of Trustees will vote on the recommendation at its January meeting. If the TARTA board approves, the funds will be added to the TMACOG Transportation Improvement Program (the TIP) and the vehicles will be procured.
Five agencies applied for funding. Applications were scored on criteria including access to transportation and need, vehicle utilization, management capacity, and coordination efforts. In addition, all the agencies’ plans were judged to be consistent with the Toledo Urbanized Area Coordinated Public and Human Services Transportation Plan Update. The agencies that are recommended to receive grants are:
Maumee Senior Center - recommended to receive $47,868 to purchase one Specialized Transportation vehicle to provide transportation and receive $898 for preventative maintenance costs. The center transports 10-15 low-income seniors with physical and/or mental disabilities and limited mobility clients per day.
East Toledo Family Center - recommended to receive $56,549 to purchase two Specialized Transportation vehicles to provide transportation for elderly, physically, and/or mentally disabled clients. The East Toledo cCenter serves 100 elderly and disabled individuals.
