Thank you New Members
Welcome to the Maritime Academy of Toledo and the Home Builders Association of Greater Toledo.
The Maritime Academy of Toledo (TMAT) joined TMACOG in April. They will be caucusing with the School Districts, and Colleges & Universities Caucus.
The academy is a tuition-free public school serving about 300 students in grades 5 through 12. They offer career technical education programs including Maritime Occupations and Marine Environmental Science which are not offered at any other school in Ohio.
School Superintendent Thomas W. Shafer said, “We felt joining TMACOG was essential because we share the same goals. Our graduates are employed in the transportation industry and we, as an entire school, have a great regard for our inland waterways.” Learn more about the Maritime Academy and its programs here.
Home Builders Association of Greater Toledo has re-joined TMACOG and the Stormwater Coalition. They are part of the Non-governmental Members Caucus which includes utilities and advocacy groups as well as trade associations and private businesses.
Steve Mitchell of Mitchell Development is on the HBA Board of Directors and is attending Stormwater Coalition meetings. He said, “It’s important that the home building industry be represented at TMACOG. Our industry has a big impact on regional economic development, and governments benefit from the fees we pay.” He notes that builders work with stormwater regulations every day and understand the issues. He added, ”We want to be at the table and be part of the process, part of the solution.”
Chair of the Stormwater Coalition Kevin Laughlin, who is also a stormwater coordinator for the Wood County Engineer’s Office, said that it’s important that builders contribute to the Stormwater Coalition. “Subdivision development is common throughout the TMACOG region,” he said. “And stormwater regulations affect that industry. There’s always some pushback from industries that are newly regulated and we all need to keep the conversation active. Having the home builders at the table improves the dialog.”
