Clean Ohio Funds Return $1.2 Million to Lucas County

The most current round of Clean Ohio Fund grants for the preservation of open spaces was awarded to Metroparks Toledo for phase two of the Toledo East Riverfront project (formerly the Marina District). The Metroparks is developing 23 acres of former brownfields at Riverside Drive and Main Street in East Toledo for a new downtown Toledo waterfront park.

Clean Ohio funds are evaluated on a point system that weighs environmental, educational, and community benefits. The Metroparks application described how the planned park will preserve or restore water quality, improve functioning floodplains and wetlands, include streamside forested area and preserve natural features. Plans include stormwater collection and treatment systems on the property. They received additional points for educational opportunities including signage, Metroparks-led programs, and coordination with citizen science programs including TMACOG’s Student Watershed Watch. When complete the site will include access for fishing and a canoe and kayak launch. Metropark staff expect 500,000 annual visitors.
