Tips For Successful Ridesharing

You are ready to form a new carpool or vanpool. Your commute can be smooth and painless if you have a plan. It is usually disagreements on "minor" points that break up carpools and vanpools. It is a good idea for you and your fellow passengers to have a preliminary get-together to meet each other and come to agreement about the rules of your pool’s operation. Take a few minutes to set up some rules -- you’ll be glad you did.

    • Decide who will drive when. Make sure everyone has a list with each carpooler’s home and work phone numbers in case of illness or emergency.

    • Choose a convenient meeting place, like a Park and Ride lot, or pick each person up at home.

      Set a few rules, like:

      1. How long you will wait for late riders?

      2. Smoking or non?

      3. Food and drink okay in the car?

      4. Music, news or nothing?

      5. Perfume or cologne a problem?

    • Decide on costs. If you share the driving equally, you don’t need to exchange money. If one person drives, divide the cost among the passengers.

    • Check your insurance - some policies offer rate reductions for ridesharing.

    • Give the pool some time to work. It usually takes a few weeks to get going.

    • If you find the carpool is not working out for you, give your pooling partners a couple of weeks notice so they can make alternate arrangements.

    • Don’t forget to buckle up!
